Romancing Vietnam

Vietnam is still a neophyte in the tourism market. But this Southeast Asian country is already gaining quite a reputation among travelers. Vietnam is considered a romantic country as well as one of the world’s most beautiful travel destinations. Many travelers fell under the spell of Vietnam’s lush landscape, rich culture and magnificent scenery.

For so many years, Vietnamese were unwilling to welcome visitors into their homes. It was only in recent years that Vietnam opened their homes and land to foreigners. So get a backgrounder on the country culture before your flight and do some research on the major role played by Vietnam in the American history.

Vietnam: An Inside Look

From 1744 until the abdication of the last emperor in 1945, Hue was Vietnam’s capital city. The Imperial Citadel on the Perfume River’s northern bank features 10 entrances, with a watchtower on the top of each gate. Much of the citadel and its ramparts—Forbidden, Imperial and Capital—were destroyed in 1968 in the Tet Offensive. Restoration work has been undertaken on the Forbidden Purple City.

A must-see for travelers is the Ho Chi Minh, the largest city in Vietnam as well as a major port and business center. The city is Cochinchina’s capital and everywhere you could see the influence of France, from the wide boulevards to café society to colonial villas to cuisine. Within the city are the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Ben Thanh Market, Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, Xa-loi Pagoda, Quoc Tu Pagoda, War Remnants Museum and the Reunification Palace with an NVA tank outside.

The 745-mile Ho Chi Minh Trail is ideal for cycling, hiking or driving. The trail runs from Hanoi to the city of Ho Chi Minh, meandering along the Khe Sanh battlefield, Dak Rong Bridge, Ben Hai Bridge, Truong Son National Cemetery, Highway 15 to Hamburger Hill.

Take time also to enjoy the natural beauty of Vietnam by visiting its national parks, including Cat Ba Island’s Cat Ba in Halong Bay, Con Dao Island’s Con Dao National Park and Cuc Phuong. The UNESCO World Heritage designated site, Halong Bay consists of limestone islands numbering almost 2,000. Some of these islands have caves and hollow and two--the Cat Ba and Tuan Chau—have tourist accommodations and facilities such as golf course, fishing club and hotels.

Going Around Vietnam

The climate in Vietnam is varied and travelers can visit the country and enjoy its beauty anytime of the year. Heavy rains may occur during the summer months of May to October while November to April weather is wet and cool.

Domestic flights in Vietnam link the country’s various cities. Meanwhile, the rail network runs from the city of Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi, passing along the way Hue, Nha Trang and Danang. The best travel alternative to cheap but slow bus services is the open-tour bus.
