U.S. Virgin Islands: A Heaven on Earth

Travelers could not seem to get enough of the beauty of the islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, collectively called the U.S. Virgin Islands. These three islands are the reasons why thousands of tourists cite the Caribbean as their favorite vacation destination.

The close proximity of the three islands to the United States has allowed almost 2 million American citizens to visit the area annually.

What to See and Do

St. Thomas is the island most visited by tourists and the most over-developed among the three islands as well. The island prides itself with many best resorts, beaches and dining. Your days and nights will always be busy at St. Thomas. You can go windsurfing at Bluebeard's Beach, snorkeling or scuba diving at Magens Bay or Coki Beach.

You can enrich your mind and soul at the Whim Plantation Museum, Emancipation Gardens or the 99 Steps that stretch from Lille Tarne Gade to the Government Hill. The step streets were constructed by the Danes to negotiate the difficult terrain of the town.

In contrast, the island of St. John, which is the smallest among the three with only 28 square miles, is for nature lovers. Nearly sixty percent of the island's total landmass is under the control and protection of the U.S. National Park Service. Snorkeling and hiking are the popular activities in this island.

The largest among the three islands is the St. Croix. The island is a balance of the two islands, not so serene and laid-back as St. John but not so boisterous as St. Thomas. However, St. Croix residents are starting to feel more life in the area with the great nightlife and exciting gambling. Here in St. Croix you can find the Buck Island Reef famous for scuba diving, snorkeling and swimming. You can also visit for free the Estate Mount Washington Plantation, a preserved sugar plantation.

When to Go

Throughout the year, tourists and residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands are experiencing a humid and hot weather. The peak travel season is between December and May. The Crucian Christmas festival and St. Thomas carnival take place during these months.

Unlike other vacation spots, summer months in the U.S. Virgin Islands are off season. This is the period when travelers could find discounted flights and hotel rates to any place in the three islands. Catch the annual July 4th celebration in the islands to get the most of your off-season stay at the U.S. Virgin Islands.

How to Get Around the Islands

Both St. Croix and St. Thomas have their own airports. Inter-island flights are available and so is a helicopter service. Car-rentals are another option that is available. Or, you can ferry your way from St. Thomas to St. Croix aboard the Virgin Islands Fast Ferry or from St. Thomas to the smaller island of St. John aboard the Republic Barge Service Inc. car ferry.
