Trinidad and Tobago: Picture-Perfect Twin Islands

Vacationing in Trinidad and Tobago is like being in two opposite worlds. They are alike in some ways but different in others. Fondly known as fraternal twins, the smaller Tobago exudes a slow, laid-back lifestyle, with some undeveloped portions. Meanwhile, the other twin, Trinidad is populated by sophisticated and chic people who are used to a fast-paced lifestyle.

The islands are among the wealthiest in the Caribbean in terms of spectacular tourist attractions. The capital city, Port of Spain is located in Trinidad. The city is bounded on the north by mountains while postcard-perfect, white-sand beaches lined the east and north coasts of the island.

What to Expect in Trinidad and Tobago

The Port of Spain is where all major flights land. Tourists are usually awe-struck in seeing the various mosques, skyscrapers and cathedrals. Brace yourself for a knee-weakening bazaar and tap your feet in time with the beat of steel drums during calypso dancing. Or fill your eyes with the greenness of the 400-acre Queen's Park Savannah.

Many tourists hie off to Trinidad because of its many festivals, including the pre-Lenten festivity and the Divali festival of lights, an annual Hindu celebration. Meanwhile, 55 miles outside Port of Spain is the 100-acre Asphalt or Pitch Lake. This unique, natural wonder was discovered in 1595 by Sir Walter Raleigh. It is believed that the lake's water has therapeutic properties due to its sulfur content.

Get to see some bird-life in the islands by visiting the Caroni Nature Reserve, Asa Wright Nature Center, Pointe-a-Pierre Wild Fowl Trust and Nariva Swamp. Meanwhile, Tobago is where water-sports enthusiasts prefer to go because of the island's spectacular dive spots, including Buccoo Reef, Manta City, Blackjack Hole, London Bridge, Diver's Thirst, The Sisters and The Shallows.

Tobago also prides itself with some land attractions including egg laying leatherback turtles, the Tobago Forest Reserve, the historical monument of Fort King George, the Tobago Museum of Art and the Argyle Waterfalls.

When to Go to Trinidad and Tobago

The tropical climate in the islands gives out an average maximum temperature of 89 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to the constant northeast trade winds, cooler temperature prevails in Tobago. The annual rainfall in both islands is nearly 40 inches.

The dry months of January to May are the best season to visit Trinidad and Tobago. Be sure to make advance booking when you plan to take a trip during carnival season. Rainy months in both islands are June to December.
