The Allure of Sri Lanka

A Look at Inside Sri Lanka

Buddhist architecture and art dominate the scenery in this pear-shaped island. Begin your journey inside Sri Lanka by exploring the famous ancient city of Anuradhapura. This 380 BC capital city was once ruled by Sinhalese kings for over 1,000 years. Buddha is everywhere in Sri Lanka. Legend has it the Sacred Bo-Tree brought enlightenment to Buddha. The right collar bone of Buddha is housed in Anuradhapura’s oldest temple, Thuparama Dagoba.

The Dalada Maligawa temple in Kandy houses Buddha’s tooth which has been in the country since the 4th century. Religious services and traditional music at the temple will surely enthrall you.

Many travelers hike to the summit of the Adam’s Peak to pay homage to the site where Buddha supposedly left his footprint during this third visit. December to April saw a great number of tourists hiking to this highest point of the country.

For beaches, travelers head off to the southern coast of the country. The Bentota is packed with tourists during the dry months to scuba dive and snorkel and take advantage of the magnificent coral reefs of Unawatuna and Hikkadawa.
