St Martin: The Place to Be for an Intercultural Beach Vacation

Beaches in the Caribbean region are plentiful, but those on the island of Saint Martin, also known as Saint Martin, have a unique flavour and ambience that make them very popular among tourists the world over. The Dutch and French cultures dominate this island, which France and the Netherlands have shared for hundreds of years.

The Dutch part of St Martin is located on the southern part of the island. This is where tourists usually disembark from cruise ships or fly in from other locations. It is a mecca for shoppers, with plenty of duty-free stores. Entertainment destinations such as casinos and nightclubs are likewise plentiful here. First-time visitors to St Martin will find many things to do and explore on this side of the island.

The French part of St Martin is on the northern side, and while the attractions here are plentiful too, the pace of life is a bit more relaxed. People who prefer some quiet, or those who want to take a break from all the activity in the south escape to this part of St Martin to just chill on the beach -- there are quite a few nude beaches there -- or do some unhurried shopping.

Weather in St Martin

The climate in St Martin does justice to the Caribbean's reputation for balmy, tropical weather. You can generally expect it to be warm and sunny pretty much all the year round, though rain showers do occur every now and then. But just like on some other Caribbean islands, these showers do not tend to last very long. Keep in mind, however, that tropical storms do visit the island, typically in late summer or early autumn.

Temperatures in St Martin play between 72 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit if you are going to be inland.

Traveling to and Around St Martin

December and January -- the holiday months -- are the super-peak periods in St Martin. So of course, you can expect air fares and accommodation rates to be much higher at this time. Those who are traveling on a budget would find it best to visit the island during the off-peak season.

Rental cars are the main mode of transportation among tourists in St Martin. But to visit some of the less crowded beaches, it is recommended to hire a four-wheel drive vehicle.

Entry Requirements for St Martin

Citizens of the United States who wish to enter St Martin should have a valid passport or a birth certificate with a raised seal plus photo identification. A visa is unnecessary for those staying a maximum of three months. However, all travellers should have either a return ticket or an onward ticket to another destination, and a local address must be specified in their immigration forms.
