St. Lucia: A Relaxing Getaway

The volcanic island of St. Lucia is an all-year favorite vacation destination by people from various parts of the world. This makes the tourism industry a force behind the island's economic growth.

The island is located in the Caribbean, just north of the Grenadines and Saint Vincent islands, south of Martinique and northwest of Barbados.

An Inside Look on St. Lucia

A must-see attraction in St. Lucia is Mount Soufriere, a one-of-a-kind drive-in volcano. Only in St. Lucia can you see a drive-in volcano so put this place on the top of your itinerary when you plan your trip to St. Lucia.

Visit also the Pigeon Island national park located on an islet, 40 acres in size. The islet is linked to St. Lucia's west coast by a causeway. You could see several military garrisons and barracks that were constructed by the British when they fought against the French for total control of the island.

Scattered at the Diamond Falls are bathhouses that were constructed by King Louis XVI when St. Lucia were still under the control of the French government. The bathhouses, used then by French soldiers, were situated in a mineral-rich falls which have therapeutic properties. Taking a bath under the falls is a popular activity among tourists today. Many are amazed at the changing colors of the falls, from yellow to black to green then grey. This is because of the sulfuric build-up in the falls.

If you want a more challenging activity, climb the Pitons for about two-hours and reward yourself with a dip at the mineral-rich river of Sulphur Springs and a bottle of local beer with the same name.

<>Hiking through the Barre de l'Isle Trail rainforest for three hours can be quite exhilarating but worth the experience. Engulf yourself with the beauty of the La Tille waterfall which is located in a 10-acre natural garden. If you fly to St. Lucia between March and July, you could watch leatherback turtles lay their eggs at Grande Anse beach.

Climate and Travel Information

St. Lucia is a tropical island paradise that can be enjoyed year-round. The daily average temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit combined with mild trade winds blowing cool breezes helped counteract the humidity in the island. The best months to visit the island are from November to May. The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers and Jazz Festival are some activities that await tourists who were lucky to book their flights during these months.

Hurricanes may occur between June to November which is the lean season for the tourism industry in the island. Although cheap flights and hotel rates are abundant during this period, there is a risk that rain will hamper your plan to have some fun on the island during your stay.

The best way to get around St. Lucia is by minivan buses that run regularly around the island. You can also take the taxis but make sure that you have negotiated the fare before going off to your destination.
