Russia: A Country of Diversity and Individuality

Russia can be best described in superlatives, including the world’s largest country, largest natural gas supplier, world’s second largest producer of oil, site of the world’s longest railroad and the oldest lake and a subway system with the most traffic.

Russia has come a long way from being under the clutches of communism to a nation known for its diversity and individuality. Renewed excitement is in the air when you visit Russia.

What to See Inside Russia

Ski areas are abundant in Russia, numbering over 100. Some of the world famous ski areas in Russia are the Mount Elbrus which is known for its highest peak and whole year skiing, the Volen Sport Park which has six slopes and 40 miles away from Moscow and the Caucasus Mountain’s Cheget.

The Black Sea resort town of Sochi is known as the preferred resort of Stalin and the favorite of the current president of Russia. The warm climate allows travelers to mountain ski during winter and swim in the crystal clear sea water in the summer. Sochi is now undergoing a massive makeover because it will be hosting the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. You can also see Russia’s biggest botanical gardens in Sochi.

For a little Slavic history, visit the Veliky Novgorod which is the oldest city in Russia. This historic city is the site of the St Sophia the Wisdom of God cathedral which is the oldest in Russia. The historic center is the detinets. The town’s architectural monuments have been listed in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

Another must-see in Russia is the Kamchatka where volcanoes and geysers are common sights. Explore the area and see its many extinct and active volcanoes, hot springs and mineral springs. Right in the central Russia is Kostroma which is among the oldest cities in the country. The sight of the five-domed Resurrection Church-on-the Debre is something seen only in fairytales. This city is said to be a favorite by Romanov tsars. In fact, Nicholas II, who is the last tsar, paid a visit to the Ipatievsky Monastery in Kostroma.

Breathe in some of Russia’s history at Volgograd where the infamous Second World War fight between German and Russian soldiers happened. A 269-foot tall statue, called Motherland Calls! is erected on Mamayev Kurgan to commemorate the fallen soldiers.
