The island of enchantment, as Puerto Rico has come to be known, should be a must-see for every tourist who loves perfect beaches and intoxicating nightlife.

What Puerto Rico Offers

The urban city of San Juan in the northern coast of the country is the point of entry and exit for many tourists. The major attraction in the area is the Old San Juan which features cobblestone streets and Spanish architecture. The area was once surrounded by walls to protect it from invaders. Beguiling and captivating beaches dot the eastern and western portions of San Juan. Some resorts have amenities that are world class.

If you are an animal lover, head off to the 28,000 acres of rainforest in El Yungue where you could go on a hike and have the opportunity to see the endangered green parrots, miniature orchids and coqui frogs.

Many locals prefer to spend their vacation in the southwest portion of the island where the terrains are varied, with some places covered in lush forest and others desert-like. The best beaches could also be found in the southwest area, including the Cabo Rojopeninsula and Gilligan's Island.

If you want to see a piece of the island's history, visit the Ponce which has 17th-century architecture, including a charming town square, colonial homes, plazas, fountains, churches and an ancient cathedral. The country's second oldest city, San German also features historic architecture, including the oldest church which was built in 1606.

After walking down the path of history, get acquainted with the country's nature by visiting the Rio Camuy Cave Park and its subterranean rivers and over 200 caves. Add the Guanica Dry Forest Reserve in your itinerary and view the unusual animals and plants in the subtropical dry forest. If you are a diving enthusiast, go to the bioluminescent bay of La Parguera.

Traveling to and in Puerto Rico

The tourism industry in Puerto Rico is busiest during the months of December to April. The low season of the industry is late spring. Locals try to boost the slow tourist traffic by offering summer sales.

You can go around San Juan in buses or taxis. If you are staying in a hotel, inquire about their van service. Going around Puerto Rico's major cities or resorts can be fun if done on foot. You can opt to ride on publicos which are minivans that ply in most towns. Another transportation option is a tour bus or ferry. If money is not a problem, you can charter a plane or boat to see the whole of Puerto Rico.
