How to Enjoy Peru

Popular among travelers is the ancient city of Machu Picchu. The area still reflects its Inca legacies and the mystery that surrounds the city continuous to draw tourists to this country in South America. Over 50 burial sites were discovered by archaeologists in Machu Picchu. Added to these are more than 100 skeletal remains. There is an unresolved debate on whether Machu Picchu is a royal haven before the invasion of Spaniards or a forgotten city.

The world's third-highest waterfall is located in Peru. The 2,532 feet Gocta Falls is situated in the upper portion of the Amazon basin. According to folklore, native people has kept the existence of the waterfall a secret because they do not want to incur the wrath and ire of a stunningly beautiful mermaid who is said to be living in the falls.

A well-preserved Inca city, Choquequirao is less popular compared with Machu Picchu. The ancient city is said to be the place where the Inca royalty escaped during the Spanish conquest. There is still so much to be discovered about this ancient city as excavation on the area has barely started.

Visit also the city of Lima, home of the San Francisco Monastery and Church famous for its ancient catacombs which contain bones of a great number of bodies. The church building was constructed by the Spaniards and is dated as far back as 1600s.

Another must-see city in Peru is Puno which is located near Lake Titicaca, known as the world's highest navigable lake. This folkloric capital city of Peru is rich in cultural and artistic traditions. Over 300 ethnic dances originated from the area, famous of which is the Diablada performed during the Virgin of Candelaria feast.

When to Enjoy Peru

Generally, the country of Peru is sunny but heavy sea mist occurs between April to November. Wet season is experienced in the highlands between October and April and dry season between May to September.

The coastal area of Peru is best visited during summer months of December to March. Meanwhile, dry months are May and September in the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, Cuzco and the Sacred Valley. You can also enjoy trekking through the jungle during these months.
