Mexico: A Tourist Heaven

The tourism industry in Mexico is one of the biggest in the world. Over 20 million people are visiting Mexico annually, captivated by its friendly people and an easy and fun way of life.

Mexico is the world's 14th biggest country and Americas' fifth largest. Over 100 million live in Mexico which has a stable economy. The country's capital, Mexico City is called home by almost 22 million people. However, despite the large population, people in this country have never been influenced by the fast-paced lifestyle found in its neighboring country, the United States. The Mexicans prefer to live life slowly and to always have fun.

Why Visit Mexico

Mexico is surrounded by crystal clear water and powdery, white-sand beaches. One of its popular tourist destinations is Cancun where you can find an extensive array of water activities, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, jet skiing and parachuting. For those who want to take time out from all the water activities, there are spas, dining, dancing and shopping. Or you can go outside Cancun to visit ecological theme parks and some Mayan ruins.

Puerto Vallarta boosts of beaches and cliffs, with Sierra Madres as the backdrop. You would not notice time passing by as you stroll along the cobblestone streets leading to galleries, shops and restaurants. You can also do whale-watching, mountain biking or sea kayaking. Many tourists who have been to Puerto Vallarta cannot seem to have enough of the place.

If you want nonstop fun, head off to the resort town of Acapulco where you can spend the day on recreational activities such as water skiing, jet skiing, playing tennis or golf or just taking a nap on the beach to prepare for an all-night partying.

The diving locations in Cozumel are topnotch. The area is surrounded by over 25 reef formations and there is diving for amateurs and professionals. The island is lined with white-sand beaches, with huge waves on the eastern side and mild waves on the western side.

When to Visit Mexico

Hot and humid climate prevail in coastal plains of Mexico while temperate and dry weather can be experienced at higher inland elevation. The average daytime temperature can reach as high as 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Tourists flock to the country's southern coast resorts from July to September. Holidays could also be quite busy in the country, especially during Semana Santa and Christmas week.

The best time to book a flight anywhere in Mexico is after the rainy months when cheap flights, discounted hotel rates and smaller crowds are the trend.

How to Get Around Mexico

Majority of cities and resorts in Mexico have public transportation. The city-bus system in Cancun is quite reliable, the same with that in Vallarta. Mexico City's public transportation system is extensive while fixed-rate taxis could be had at Cozumel.

American citizens who plan to stay in Mexico for more than six months are required to get a visa.
