Lesotho: A Kingdom for Tourists
The Southern African country of Lesotho consists of three geographical regions. This makes the country a perfect tourist destination anytime of the year and earned it the monicker “The Kingdom in the Sky.”
You should know that Lesotho is a land of mass highlands and ascending altitude. The Maluti Mountains is a high plateau that stands nearly 10,000 feet. The country’s highest point is the Thabana Ntlenyana which is about 11,425 feet tall.
What Lesotho Can Offer to Its Visitors
South Africa’s highest dropping waterfall is situated in the center of Lesotho. The waterfall pours its volumes of water into Maletsunyane River. The cascading water which falls steeply into the river creates an amazing and gorgeous to behold lush landing point, resulting in rushing water sounds surrounded by a mesmerizing mist. If you are adventurous, you can try climbing the gorge.
Festivals are common events all-year round in Lesotho. October 4 is the Independence Day celebration of the country. This is the time when locals celebrate their freedom from the British. The city of Moshoeshoe honors its founding father. Maseru procession starts at the Palace going to the Sotho Stadium where local dresses made of blankets, straw hats and sticks are showcased. Even military and police officials join in the celebration.
Make sure also to visit the 500-feet Katse Dam. The dam is very important for the people in the Gauteng Province as it provides the water required for electricity. A human-made reservoir holds the water which is pulled by gravity to the province and the surrounding rural countryside. Aside from the beneficial function of the dam, it also has an aesthetic role in the area. The dam is situated between mountain ranges to create a perfect panoramic view.
