The Mystifying Laos

Buddhism is a way of life in Laos, with almost 60 percent of Laotians practicing this traditional Southeast Asian belief. If you want to experience and see how Buddhism shapes this country or want to find comfort in this belief, plan your trip to Laos and you will be amazed by how many dutiful monks, devout Buddhists and travelers visit the country annually.

The landscape of Laos is lined with magnificent temples and gorgeous shrines. The country is inhabited by Khmer tribes, Thai and Vietnamese whose influence can be felt heavily on the cuisine, music and sculpture. The culture and belief in Laos is represented in most part in the religious and traditional display of the Buddha. But there is another facet of Laos that many people outside the country do not know. The country is also peopled by some of the world’s best and finest artists.

What to Expect in Laos

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Lan Xang Kingdom’s ancient city capital of Luang Prabang is famous for its magnificent temples and opulent palaces scattered along the Mekong River bank. One of the most lavish temples is the Wat Xieng Thong which features gilded facades and a tiered roof.

Also a must-see is the National Museum which was originally the Royal Palace. The structure was constructed in the 1900s by the French. It houses the Holy Golden Buddha or Phra Bang which is covered in gold leaves.

For an awesome full view of the city, climb the almost 300 steps going to the top of the Mount Phousito See Wat That Chom Sii. From there you can see monks receiving a line of local folks who are giving alms.

Nearby is the Pak Ou Caves—Tham Phun and Tham Ting. The two caves house many Buddah images owned and left by followers for many centuries. In the southern part of the country is Si Phan Do which means Four Thousand Island situated right there in the Mekong River. The capital city of Vientiane is where you can find and climb the Victory Monument. The city is also the site of That Luang Buddhist monument which was constructed in 1566 and repaired in 1935.

In the north-central portion of Laos is an area where giant stone jars are scattered. Hundreds of jars, believed to be associated with burial rituals, have been discovered with some reaching as high as 10 feet.

For a little bit of history, go on a trek on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. These are secret roads that run parallel to the border of Laos and Vietnam. North Vietnamese used this trail in two wars.
