The Reggae and Beaches of Jamaica
When you think of Jamaica, what usually comes to mind are the image of bikini-clad women swaying in rhythm with the reggae music against the backdrop of clear blue waves and glinting, white sand beach.
This image is not far from reality, making Jamaica one of the favorite tourist destinations in the world. Jamaica is the third biggest Caribbean island, with a thriving economy brought about by the growth of several industries, including agriculture, finance, mining, tourism and manufacturing.
The Attractions of Jamaica
If you are a reggae fanatic, make sure to visit the city of Kingston, said to be the birthplace of reggae. Sample the best of what the city can offer in theater, art, dance, festivals, galleries, museums and historic buildings. The nightlife in the city is an experience that any tourist should not miss.
The Montego Bay is the first choice of place to visit by tourists in Jamaica. It has the busiest cruise pier, a 10-mile shoreline dotted with blue lagoons and coral reefs against the backdrop of lush green hills. Visitors and shoppers flock to the Gloucester Avenue which is the major tourist area. There are so many attractions and activities at the bay, including golfing, bird watching, historic houses and music festivals.
Another must-see place in Jamaica is Negri and its miles and miles of pristine, white-sand beaches, discos, clubs, water sport facilities and the captivating sunsets. The resort area still retains its laid-back atmosphere despite the popularity of its nude and prude beaches. Excellent beaches can also be found in Ocho Rios resort. This is the first town in Jamaica that was developed specifically to provide tourists with a place to enjoy the sun and sea. Here, you can see numerous bars, shops and restaurants.
When to Travel to Jamaica
Jamaica's 81-degree Fahrenheit annual average temperature makes the country a perfect year-round tourist destination. Cool trade winds keep the winters warm while summer can sometimes be very humid. The peak travel season is between December to April. During these months, air fare and hotel room rates are the most expensive. An advance booking for at least two months is highly recommended if you plan to travel during the peak season.
January to April are busy months also for some towns because of festivals and carnivals. Months following April up to mid-December are the lean season when you can expect rates reduced by as much as 60 percent. But it could get busy around late July during the Reggae Sumfest and in October for the Marlin Tournament.
Domestic Traveling
A cheap way to get around Jamaica is by bus or minibuses. Another cheap alternative, especially if you are traveling short distances, is taxis, mopeds or motorcycles. Rental cars are also available but it can be pricey. All U.S. citizens traveling as tourist to Jamaica need not get a visa. However, if you enter the country on business, visa is a requirement.
