Haiti: Land of Surprises

The Republic of Haiti, as it is known officially, is a land full of surprises. Haiti's political history is replete with ups and downs that sometimes, traveling to the country can be a complex deal. Travelers are advised to be informed about the current situation in the country before their scheduled travel.

Haiti is the first island in the Caribbean to gain its independence. The island country gained its independence through a slave rebellion. From 1915 to 1933, Haiti struggled for power against the United States. It is now a country that has established its own culture as reflected in its growing art and music scenes.

What Haiti Could Offer

Notwithstanding the political instability in Haiti, many tourists still find the country their favorite destination. The country's bustling capital city of Port-au-Prince is called home by almost 1 million people. Start your cultural exploration of the country in this city by visiting some of the famous landmarks, such as the iron market, the neo-romantic cathedral, Status of the Unknown Slave and the Museum of the Haitian Art.

If you want a calmer atmosphere, head off to the Petionville where you can find galleries, restaurants and nightlife in its hillsides. To really get your fill of the country's history, visit the North Coast and the Cap-Haitien. Here you can see the Columbus shipwreck, Spanish-style buildings, fine beaches and lush green mountains.

At the Southern Coast and Jacmel, you would not stop snapping pictures of stucco terraces, palaces and balconies. Many artists visit Jacmel because of its mystic and voodoo temples. The streets of Jacmel is full of dancing people and live music during the carnival time.

Take some time off from exploring the rich culture of Haiti by relaxing on one of its sunny beaches. The Cacique Isle's Kyono and Ibo beaches are best for swimming, spear fishing, waterskiing, snorkeling and sailing. If you are a fishing enthusiast, the best place to cast a line is at La Gonave.

When To Visit Haiti

Traveling to Haiti is a complex deal because you have to consider both the weather and political conditions in the country. Hot weather dominates the months of April to November. However, hurricane season follows, usually from August to September. Timing is crucial when planning a trip to Haiti. Storm warnings and hurricanes are common in this country. Also, the U.S. Department of State could issue a ban travel to Haiti for security reasons.
