Gibraltar: Land of the Strong

Travelers can expect their vacation in Gibraltar to be entertaining. For starters, the country is home to Europe’s wild moneys, the Barbary macaques. Of course, there is also the Rock of Gibraltar which symbolizes several things to the locals including unity and strength. It was even believed to be one of the pillars of the Greek hero, Hercules.

When to Go to Gibraltar

With its location on the coast of the Mediterranean, Gibraltar’s climate is a wonderful combination of mild winters and delightfully warm summers. Considering this, it is not surprising that tourists flock to the country during these two seasons particularly in the summer when the beaches offer a wonderful getaway. For the rest of the year, Gibraltar is relatively quiet and some shops and restaurants are even closed. Also, there are less ferries travelling from Gibraltar to Morocco and Spain which means that you will need to plan your day trips in anticipation of such schedules.

What to See in Gibraltar

There is plenty to do in this country depending on your preference. For instance, if you have a thing for military-related stuff, you will be delighted with the Rock of Gibraltar which is considered to be the ultimate icon of the Royal Armed Forces. The Spanish actually tried to invade this British stronghold many times in the past but Gibraltar was heavily protected and guarded.

In addition to the great military defensive strategy, there is also the belief that Gibraltar will not fall as long as the Barbary macaques continue to reside in the island. In fact, Winston Churchill even ordered the repopulation of the said species to avoid testing the superstitious belief.

Gibraltar has also been a favorite among moviemakers. Several movies have shot scenes at the island including Das Boot and The Living Daylights, a James Bond film.

With its relatively small land area, about 3 square miles, visitors will have an easy and comfortable time checking out the different sites and attractions that include the Europa Point and the Mediterranean Steps. There is also St. Michael’s Cave, which boasts of stunning stalactites and rock formation and the cathedral Cave, which is the venue for operas, concerts and other amazing performances.
