Cuba: A Country of Beauty and Diversity

The volatile political situation in Cuba has hindered the potential growth of the tourism industry in the country. However, despite the political instability, Cuba is still considered as one of the most captivating countries in the world. It is the most populated and diverse country of the Caribbean region.

Currently, it is very difficult for U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba. But this could end soon with pending legislation that could allow more flights to Cuba.

What to See and Do in Cuba

When in Cuba, visit Cueva Punta del Este, a cave located near a sun-drenched beach. Cueva Punta was discovered in 1910 but travel experts believed that it has been existing since 800 AD. The cave has a natural grotto inside with a ceiling covered by an intricate drawing of a solar calendar showing black and red painted circles to symbolize the movement of the earth around the sun.

Additionally, the ceilings and walls of the cave are painted with over 235 symbols of natural elements, creating a monumental Caribbean Indian art collection. If you are a culture and history buff, time should be set aside to explore the cave.

Another attraction to see in Cuba is the botanical gardens at the La Jungla De Jones. You can see over 80 species of trees scattered around the estate and lining the walkways. Marvel at the continuous rows of arching leaves and stems meeting each other above to create a shady footpath for anyone to meander through.

If you are a baseball enthusiast, Cuba is the place to be. The country prides itself with rigorous training to create skilled baseball players. If you want to get in the game, bring the necessary equipment for some games with the locals.

Another reason to be in Cuba is the Fiesta del Fuego. The weeklong celebration at the city of Santiago involves flowing Cuban rum, street parades, dancing and abundant food. Children may also enjoy riding goat carts.

Travel and Transportation at Cuba

December to April are the best months to visit Cuba. The weather is not too hot or humid. However, traveling to Cuba during winter is more expensive than during summer. This is because winter weather in the country is mild and enjoyable.

If you plan to really enjoy what Cuba has to offer, do not book your flights during the hurricane season, with the worst being November. The airline tickets and hotel rates may be significantly cheaper than during peak season but the inconvenience and risks are not worth whatever amount you have saved.

Getting around the country could be done easily and quickly by booking local flights via Cuban Airlines. Or you can opt to take an air-conditioned bus or train or rent a car.

Because travel from the U.S. to Cuba is strictly controlled, all American travelers are required to have their passports and visas and a license issued by the U.S. Department of Treasury before making an entry to Cuba.
