Bolivia: Enriching Sights and Sounds
During the 1800s, Simon Bolivar led several sovereign campaigns and movements in the South American region. The independence of Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Panama and Peru is credited to this man who led the fight for sovereignty.
The country of Bolivia is bordered in the northwest by Peru, Brazil in east and north and Paraguay in the southeast. Bolivia is the 28th largest country in the world in terms of landmass which is twice as big as Texas.
What to Expect in Bolivia
Right inside Bolivia is Potosi, a once wealthy town thanks to the silver mining industry. However, after almost 300 years of prosperity, the town's wealth started to wane when the supply of silver ran out around 1800. The town then switched its livelihood to tin which is not as productive as silver. In 1987, Potosi was designated as UNESCO World Heritage. Travelers flock to Potosi to get a feel of the glory days of the city.
Said to be the world's highest capital city, La Paz is a fascinating addition in your Bolivia itinerary. Here you can visit the witches market or Mercado de Hechiceria. You can see and buy herbal remedies for almost all ailments that may afflict humans, including potions, llama fetuses and candles to drive away evil spirits.
Sports enthusiasts will have a field day in Bolivia which could have been formed by nature for adventure travel. Activities include white-water rafting, boat cruising across Lake Titicaca, trekking up the Andes and the extreme, Gravity Assisted Mountain Biking. This dangerous activity involves biking down the 12,000 feet of the so-called death road.
Visit also the Cochamba which is situated in the Andes valley. The area is called by many names, including Garden City or City of Eternal Spring. The town is also the home of the biggest and extensive open air market, La Cancha.
